I've always felt incredibly guilty that I got very, very ill in May and never really reviewed the Gold Motel show I went to in New Jersey properly, so I'm going to write up a quick little review of the one I went to tonight because ALL PUBLICITY IS GOOD PUBLICITY, and we MUST SUPPORT THE ARTISTS!!!! (There. Moralising over. Promise.)

EASILY the oldest non-parent there. By a good seven or eight years. *sigh*

A band called Now, Now were the very first openers, and they were...well. Adorable, in a "OMG baby scenesters" in much the same tone as one might say "OMG puppies!" kind of way. They couldn't really enunciate, so I have no idea what they were singing about, their hair was so scene I could identify it, and their levels were screwed to all hell. They were fronted by a girl who was...okay, picture a female Mikey Way, circa Summer of Like. Now let her front the band. Both the other guitarist and the drummer had considerably more stage presence, so I...couldn't really tell you why she was the one who was doing most of the talking, but...okay, then!

Then GM came out to soundcheck, and damn, friends, the backing vocalist has pipes. As much I as I adore and wish to revel in Greta's voice forever and ever amen, I would in no way object to his singing more than just backup, it's a fabulous sound. Greta managed to rile up the crowd while soundchecking, and by the time we burst into the opening song they were already nicely warmed up. People, even the people who were mostly standing around trying to be too cool for the openers, were moving to the MUSIC, which was SO FUCKING AWESOME OMG.

I know I am a zillion times over prejudiced, but I LOVE THIS MUSIC, okay, and seeing it live is AMAZING.

Also I think the guy standing next to me in the crowd fell in love with Greta. I was so grown-up, I didn't even say, "Get in line, pal."

We went out and small-talked with Greta for about thirty seconds after the set, but both Talkative and I had early work and long days ahead of us, so we didn't stick around for Hellogoodbye or Jukebox Ghost (Ghost Jukebox?). I had seen what I was there to see, after all. ^_^

But, to sum up: IF THEY EVER COME WITHIN TWO HUNDRED MILES OF YOU, GO SEE GOLD MOTEL IN CONCERT. YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT EVEN A LITTLE, BECAUSE THEY ARE SUPREMELY AWESOME.

I am still a little high on that concert, man oh man.

I've been promising to write a primer on Mormon timelines, vocabulary, and cultural norms since I joined bandom almost two years ago, and here it is. It's amazing what procrastinating your schoolwork will do for your fandom activity.

Okay, I'm going to open by establishing my credentials, to the extent of, "I say so, and it is true, but if you don't believe me you don't have to use my primer as a reference."

I was raised LDS, first in Utah, then in Colorado, then a two-year stint of South Carolina, then more Utah. My family hold to it stricter than some, but I've known worse. (No, I'm not anymore. Yes, that is partially to do with my bisexuality.)

This primer is mostly because I get fed up with seeing Brendon's dialogue contain the phrase, "go on Mission." Because, seriously—I don't care what he's rebelled against, he still knows what to call it. LDSisms aren't his second language, swearing is. (It’s “go on a mission.” I promise. Indefinite article. Lowercase “m.”)

But it's hardly fair to blame non-Mormons for not knowing about Mormon culture, now is it? So instead of ranting uselessly, I decided to write a primer.

Now, when you screw up, I know it's your fault. (Or, more likely, that I need to add to the primer. ^_~)

Once again: feel free to contact me through the comment section if you have further questions or if you have your own knowledge and disagree with any of my points. Happy writing!

Okay, so I did the "personal canon" meme, and wanted to round up my responses. Since apparently I am never going to actually FINISH any of the ten million fics I am writing. Ever. Here is pseudo-fic to tide you over!

(Warning: I am most mired in my drama-filled epic WiP, and uh. Spencer and Ryan are kind of bitter and ridic in that. So, well, their share of personal canon was not precisely cheery. I promise I love them, even though that totally does not come across here.)

Give me a character from a fandom I follow/have followed and I will give you up to five facts about them from my personal canon--that is to say, it may not be confirmed as true, but it's true in my head.
